Background

What is the European T20 Premier League (ETPL)?

The European T20 Premier League is basically where Europe’s rising interest in cricket comes together. With six franchise teams on board, the tournament brings out raw talent, real competition, and modern T20 action.

It isn’t just another cricket league on the calendar. ETPL actually gives fans a reason to follow new rivalries, catch rising players early, and watch decent cricket all season. From the first match right through to the final, every game helps push the sport a bit further across Europe.

Origins

History of the European T20 Premier League

01.

The Original Idea: Euro T20 Slam.

It all started in 2019 when Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and the Dutch board (KNCB) tried launching a joint tournament named the Euro T20 Slam. But things didn’t go as planned. Between COVID-19 and internal problems with funding and team owners, the whole league was put on hold. Even so, the basic idea never died.

02.

Rebuilding the League: ICC Sanction and a New Name

Years later, that idea was rebuilt from the ground up as the European T20 Premier League. This time it came with full ICC sanction — making it Europe’s first ICC-approved multi-country franchise T20 competition. The league is built on a first-of-its-kind partnership between the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands, three nations with proud cricketing histories and a shared goal of growing the game across the continent.

03.

The People Behind ETPL

The league was co-founded by Abhishek Bachchan, Saurav Banerjee, Priyanka Kaul and Dhiraj Malhotra.

04.

Road to the Inaugural Season

With ownership groups locked in, the league moved to building squads. A structured player draft was held in July 2026 to fill out each team’s local core, and the inaugural season kicked off in August 2026, hosted across venues in the Netherlands and Ireland.
